In the early days of settlement churches were generally one of the first things established after setters had cleared the land and provided some sort of housing for their families. Churches, although not always housed in a building specifically built for worship services, provided much of the social and political intercourse for small rural communities. They also served in many ways as courts and policing bodies for their members. When a member or members had strayed from or violated community rules of conduct a committee was often times called to "visit" with them and to decide on punishment if necessary.
